IN LIGHT OF THE RECENT COVID-19 PANDEMIC, THE EMBALMERS AND FUNERAL DIRECTORS BOARD OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR IS AIMING TO BE VIGILANT IN PROVIDING INFORMATION TO THE FUNERAL PROFESSION THAT WILL RESULT IN MINIMIZING THE THREAT TO THE HEALTH AND SAFETY OF FUNERAL PROFESSIONALS AND THE PUBLIC IN GENERAL, WHO WILL BE AVAILING OF THE SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE PROFESSION.
COVID-19 spreads mainly through close contact, within 6 feet of a person who is currently infected. The virus is transmitted primarily through droplet spray produced when the infected person coughs or sneezes. It is possible to be infected by touching a surface or object that has been contaminated by droplets containing the virus. If you are in contact with infected surfaces, it is possible to be affected by the virus if you touch your face, eyes, nose or mouth. Older people, young children, and persons with underlying health conditions are at a higher risk of developing serious COVID-19 illnesses.
The general public should be aware that your funeral services provider is very concerned about the implications of the Covid-19 situation and will be implementing measures to assure the health and safety of your family and friends at the time of your bereavement. The Funeral Profession is asking your understanding and cooperation as your work with your Funeral Provider. Please take the following precautions along with the measures implemented by your funeral provider:
Disinfect hands – with soap and water for at least 60 seconds or use a hand sanitizer (at least 60% alcohol-based)
Cover mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when coughing or sneezing
Disinfect surfaces – although there has been debate on how long a virus can live on surfaces, there seems to be a consensus that on non-porous surfaces the virus can live up to 72 hours and on porous surfaces, the virus can live up to 24 hours. To be sure of your health and safety one should assume the worst-case scenario.
Practice social distancing (refrain from hugging, handshaking, etc.)
Whenever possible, use technology to limit the need for in-person meetings or gatherings
Self-Isolation – if you are showing symptoms or you have tested positive for COVID-19
Limit unnecessary travel out of province
